Gladiators Off-Season Weekly Recap
The Gladiators made some final additions to complete their training camp roster for the 2015 season. Check out the details below:
The Cleveland Gladiators announced on Friday, March 6th they placed OL Daniel Baldridge on reassignment.
Baldridge, 29, was assigned to the Gladiators on January 9th and was to enter his first season in the AFL. Baldridge had also spent time in training camps with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2010-2012) and Tennessee Titans (2012).
Prior to that Baldridge was a standout Offensive Tackle for the Marshall University.
The Cleveland Gladiators announced on Thursday, March 5th they had been assigned MLB Tim Cheatwood, LB A.J. Holderman, and FB Chad Schofield. The team also placed DB Dominic Jones, DL Randy Colling, WR Tyrone Collins, and FB Corey Howard on the Physically Unable to Perform List, while also activating OL Marcus Hall from Recallable Reassignment and placing Hall and K Steven Schott on the Refuse to Report List.
Cheatwood, 36, returns to the field after spending the 2014 season as an assistant coach for the Glads.
Cheatwood played three seasons with the Gladiators during his AFL career, with his last year coming in 2012. During his time with the Glads, he racked up 89.5 tackles, 20.5 sacks, 21 tackles-for-loss, and 12 fumble recoveries.
Prior to joining the coaching staff in 2014, Cheatwood spent a year in Orlando for the 2013 season playing for the Predators where he made 17.5 tackles and 3 sacks, as well as forcing two fumbles.
Cheatwood is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and played his college ball at The Ohio State University.
Holderman, 23, will be entering his rookie season in the Arena Football League after a stellar four year career at Robert Morris University where he recorded seven sacks and 15 tackles-for-loss.
Holderman is from Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Schofield, 27, returns for his third season with the Cleveland Gladiators. In 2014, Schofield appeared in all 18 regular season games, starting 17, as a FB/OL and was a key component in pass protection as well as in the short yardage run game.
Schofield’s season was cut short in the Gladiators opening round playoff victory over the Philadelphia Soul due to a knee injury.
Schofield is originally from Strongsville, Ohio and played his college ball at Marshall University (2006-10).
The Cleveland Gladiators announced on Wednesday, March 4th they had been assigned DL Mike Alston and placed OL Marcus Hall on recallable reassignment.
Alston, 29, will enter his sixth season in the AFL and first with the Gladiators. Alston is coming off an impressive 2014 campaign where he set a single-season record in sacks with 9.5 for the New Orleans VooDoo. He also led the team in tackles for loss (11.5), and blocked kicks (3).
Prior to joining the VooDoo in 2014, Alston began his career with the Mahoning Valley Thunder of the AF2 in 2009 before making the jump to the AFL in 2010 with the Chicago Rush. Alston followed that up with a pair of seasons in Spokane and then a year with the Utah Blaze in 2013.
Alston is a native of Columbus, Ohio. He spent some time in the Cleveland Browns training camp in 2007 and before that played collegiately at Toledo.
The Cleveland Gladiators announced on Monday, March 2nd they had placed DL Louis Nzegwu on reassignment.
Nzegwu, 25, caught on for the final two regular season games in 2014 and appeared in two of the three Gladiators playoff games. In the playoffs, Nzegwu tallied four tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, a sack, and a forced fumble during the Gladiators playoff run.
